Today’s walk

IMG_2312It’s not especially picturesque, but that’s OK because today’s walk took me to and from the gym, which is just over a mile from my house.

Lately my schedule has afforded me the time to walk to the gym instead of drive. The bonuses:

  • A built-in warm-up, rather than putting in 10 or so minutes on the treadmill upon arriving
  • Fresh air
  • Less time sitting in front of my computer on the slow road to death (more on this in an upcoming post)
  • Two extra miles a day added to my overall mileage tally
  • More exercise time overall — my walk there and back is longer than any warm-up or cool-down I’d do, and I generally still do the same workout I’d planned once at the gym

I realize this approach doesn’t work for everyone. It sure is a lot faster to drive to the gym than walk there, no matter the distance. But while I can, it’s a bonus I hope to keep taking advantage of.

Happy walking!

One + one = motivation

It’s not news that it can be really hard to find the motivation to exercise from time to time. And fitness instructors are not immune to the desires to skip a workout, let me just say!

A great way to stick with an exercise habit is to have an exercise partner, or workout buddy. Here are some of the reasons:

Accountability

Suppose you plan to meet your friend Lauren for a walk every Tuesday evening at 6. You don’t want to leave Lauren hanging, do you? She’s expecting you to be there, and you’ll be helping her stick to her exercise routine. In turn, she’ll be helping you.

Fun

Doing a workout with a friend can help your session feel more like an enjoyable hang-out and less like something you’re doing because you “have to.”

That walk with Lauren will most likely be much more focused on catching up and, say, chatting about the latest movie you watched than paying attention to the time or the mileage. Before you know it, mission accomplished!

Competition

Exercising with someone else can inject just enough competition into the session to inspire you to push a little harder, go a little longer, bike/run/walk a little farther. It plays on what can be our natural inclination to compare ourselves and try to be the best.

Support

Along those same lines, a workout buddy can be a great cheerleader. He or she can encourage you along the way, whether your goal is to reach a certain mileage level or advance to the next-heavier dumbbell.

Comfort

It can be daunting to try a new type of exercise. Feel like you have two left feet and would look silly in Zumba? Go with a friend and you can feel goofy together.

Variety

You can try different types of exercise and different moves when you have a partner. Tennis doesn’t work so well with one player, for example. And your friend might know of new moves that you haven’t tried, increasing your fitness repertoire.

So there are many advantages to working out with someone else. But what should you look for in a workout buddy?

  • Someone you get along well with
  • Someone whose level of fitness is comparable to yours, so you’re mostly on the same page in terms of the type and intensity of exercise you’re doing
  • Someone you feel comfortable sharing your goals with
  • Someone you can count on to share your commitment
  • Someone with whom you share a vested interest in a healthy future

DSCN2795On that note, my husband and I exercise together from time to time. We used to work together and start our days at the company gym. Sometimes we go for walks; often we do a lot of bicycling together. And now, our schedules occasionally coincide so we can go to the gym together.

When that happens, I find myself feeling really happy. It’s great to look over at a nearby treadmill and see him there. And the times that we’ve done partner exercises, like tossing a medicine ball back and forth, I can’t control the goofy grin that spreads across my face. If I had to explain it, I guess I’d say that I’m proud to see us both making an effort to be healthy, for today and later in life. We have a vested interest in the other’s well-being. It’s inspiring — and super motivating.

I realize I’ve been absent for a while. I’ve been on the roller coaster of life, dealing with some changes, and that’s taken me away from posting here.

Today’s walk

My walking partner. Just couldn’t shake her! 🙂

Hey! It’s Walking Wednesday. Where will you walk today?

I took a 4.5-mile walk around my town this morning. My main intent was to work off some of the Ben & Jerry’s I ate last night. (We won’t talk about just how much Ben & Jerry’s I ate…)

Even early in the day the humidity was high, so I took it easier on the pace. Despite that, my wicking material shirt still showed giant sweat patches when I was done. Always a sign of hot weather when your quick-dry-material workout clothes aren’t dry!

Happy walking!

Today’s walk

Random thought on this morning’s walk: How come we never see baby squirrels?

I see lots of adult squirrels, scrambling up trees and scampering along branches.

I see baby deer, nibbling on leaves or narrowly avoiding death by auto.

I see baby rabbits and ducks. I see baby groundhogs (two of them live with their parents under our shed, as a matter of fact).

But where are the baby squirrels? Those parents are awfully protective, I guess!

Enough is enough

I’m pretty susceptible to advertising. Like those fast food commercials, where the Coke is so fizzy and you can almost feel how cold it is? Ahhh. Or just about any Hallmark commercial will have me reaching for the tissue box before it’s over.

I also really have a thing for clever tag lines — especially ones that employ a play on words. For example: Kudos to whoever came up with the slogan for a mattress company: “Sleepy’s, for the rest of your life.”

Anyway … I’m sure you’re wondering, how does this relate to exercise and a healthy lifestyle?

I’m not a paid (or unpaid) spokesperson, nor do I have any special affinity for the company, but I think one of the most brilliant slogans ever is Nike’s “Just do it.”

traffic-lights-208253Just do it.

Simple. Actionable. Inspiring. Even motivating. All in three words.

And right now, lately, I could use a lot of the latter. I feel a little embarrassed to say this as a fitness instructor, but I have been severely lacking in the motivation (and, for that matter, willpower) department. Summer is usually the time when I’m shot out of a cannon, getting in lots of long walks, working in my yard for half the weekend, doing lots of biking, eating piles of fresh fruit and vegetables.

But I’ve been in a slump the past month or two. I’ve had countless arguments with myself about getting out of bed and going to the gym, or resisting too many sweet treats. Bed and treats have been winning. It’s so easy to get into a vicious cycle. Not exercising leaves me more fatigued, which makes me not feel like getting out of bed in the morning, which makes me feel like a slug, which makes me want to wallow … repeat.

Enough is enough.

Alarm goes off for gym time? Just do it.

Be more active? Just do it.

Choose veggies and hummus instead of potato chips? Just do it.

Take a lap around my office instead of checking Facebook? Just do it.

Mind over matter … here I go.

Happy anniversary!

This week marks the one-year anniversary of Walk With Joelle. (Or, as Monica on Friends would say, “Happy blogiversary!”)

flag-655337I hope over the past year you’ve been entertained, informed, inspired or motivated by what you’ve read here. Or maybe all of the above. My intent is to do all of those and, in the process, encourage enthusiasm about living a healthy lifestyle. It’s so easy to think short-term, but working to stay fit and healthy has enormous long-term benefits.

In honor of this occasion, some number crunching:

Number of posts: 63

Some of the most popular: “Keeping pace,” “Top advice for keeping a resolution,” “Not so sweet,” “One million bucks

Some of the least: “Guilty as charged,” “It goes both ways

Number of miles an average person walks in one year: Roughly 1,100

Number of people who did a half marathon in the past year: More than 2 million

Record-setting age of the oldest woman to finish a full marathon, which occurred in May: 92 (so inspiring!)

Number of ideas I have for future posts: Too many to count, so keep reading!

Thanks for your support over the past year and I hope you will continue to be entertained, informed, inspired and/or motivated by Walk With Joelle.

Today’s walk

Today’s walk was for a great cause. I led (and joined in on) a one-mile walk as part of a special event. The event is called Wings for Hope, and it’s presented by Cancer Support Community of Central New Jersey. It’s held in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day and is meant to be a celebration for cancer survivors, an inspiration for people just beginning their cancer journey, a gathering of support for all those affected by cancer, and an outreach to the Central New Jersey community.

CSC is the organization where I teach a weekly Wellness Workout, and I was happy to help with the event — and the walk in particular.

More than 100 people of all ages signed up to do the 1-mile loop near the organization’s office in Bedminster. Although the skies were gray, there was no rain.

Congratulations to CSC for putting on such an inspirational event.
